چکیده

Tarii structures where charges depend on resource usage allow network operators to fairly recover costs from their customers. The notion of eeective bandwidth is an important mathematical abstraction to the complex problem of quantifying resource usage. We consider usage-based pricing schemes which are based on some bound of the eeective bandwidth and involve two measurements: the duration of a connection and the total volume transferred. The schemes are compared according to their fairness, i.e., their ability to capture the relative amount of resources used by connections. Our experiments involve a large set of MPEG-1 compressed video with diierent contents , and show that for links with a high degree of multiplexing, simple approximations can yield good performance.

Nonlinear Pricing of Information Goods

This paper analyzes optimal pricing for information goods under incomplete information, when both unlimited-usage (fixed-fee) pricing and usage-based pricing are feasible. For a general set of customer characteristics, it is shown that in the presence of contract administration costs, offering fixed-fee pricing in addition to a non-linear usage-based pricing scheme is always profitimproving, an...

Pricing of Software Services

We analyze and compare fixed-fee and usage-fee software pricing schemes — in fixed-fee pricing, all users pay the same price; in usage-fee pricing, the users’ fees depend on the amount that they use the software (e.g., the user of an online-database service might be charged for each data query). We employ a two-dimensional model of customer heterogeneity — specifically, we assume that customers...

Pricing and Financial Issues in Marketing Modeling Consumer Choice among Three-part Tariffs

In recent years, firms in a number of industries have introduced wide menus of pricing plans that grant access to a virtually identical product under different pricing schemes. These menus of tariffs allow consumers to self-select into the tariff that best fits their demand. They include pure pay-per-use tariffs, tariffs where the consumer pays an access price, and a marginal price only for usa...

Pricing-Enabled QoS for UMTS/WLAN Network

In this paper we propose a pricing-enabled QoS for the hybrid UMTS/WLAN network. The proposed methodology is an integration of usage-based, non usage-based, static, and dynamic pricing schemes and DiffServ (Differentiated Services). We propose the utility function and cost function for our needs, and the pricing mechanism is based on differentiated service classes. By the affection of price, a ...

Monopoly Profits in a Competitive Market for Undifferentiated Information Goods via Differentiated Pricing Schemes

It is known that the Bertrand outcome can be avoided when sellers are capacity constrained (Edgeworth 1897); when products are differentiated (d'Aspremont, Gabszewicz, and Thisse 1979); when the model is changed from one of short-run competition to long-run competition (Chamberlin 1929); when consumers are not perfectly informed or if it is costly for them to obtain information (Salop 1977). Ja...
